My current diet includes very few carbs and very low sugar intake, this will have to change. I plan on hiking about 20 miles a day (that is the average, some days less, some days more). I have been told to plan on consuming 4000 calories a day! It would be impossible to reach that with my current way of eating. This will be the one time in my life when I can eat anything I want and I'll still have to worry that I'm not eating enough. Oh the food I dream of eating! Unfortunately, you can't pack out pizza and ice cream lol. Your meals should be high calorie yet as light as possible and easy to cook. Dehydration is the way to go, I may do some veggies, to add to my meals, but will not be tackling dehydrating meals quite yet. So here is an idea of what I plan on eating:
BREAKFAST
I don't plan on heating water for breakfast, of course this may change if I find out I need to be warmed up in the morning. I plan on mixing 1 instant breakfast with a packet of Via instant coffee and eating a breakfast bar, (cliff bar, pop tarts, donuts, pastry ect).
SNACKS
I plan on packing about 5 snacks per day. I will try and vary this as much as possible so I don't get tired of anything. Included in the 5 snacks a day will be anything like pictured above, nuts, trail mix and candy bars (snickers and snickers with almonds).
LUNCH
Lunch which technically will be at any point during the day that I take an extended break. I hope to eat a semi normal meal, probably something wrapped in a Tortilla. There are unlimited ideas for this, but here are 2 that I will start with. Sausage and cheese and PB&J.
DINNER
Dinner, my one hot meal a day! I will be freezer bag cooking, meaning I will put my food in a freezer bag, which will be inside an insulated cozy, then add the boiling water and let it cook. This will eliminate the need to clean out my cooking pot, all the mess will be inside the ziplock. I will use packets of noodle sides (I have tested a noodle side and didn't like it, turned out mushy), rice sides, couscous, stuffing, mashed potatoes and raman, then add a packet of tuna, spam, chicken or sausage/jerkey. I may dehydrate some veggies and include a mix to throw into these meals.
RESUPPLY BOXES
I'm not sure how many resupply boxes I will send to myself, but probably 10-20. They will contain snacks and dinners for the time needed to next resupply, somewhere between 5 and 10 days. I will also have some things on stand-by that can be added to the boxes (shoes and weather appropriate gear). I will get all these packed up and ready at home in WI and my mom will be my resupplier.
TOWN FOOD
When in town I will be able to eat anything I want! My appetite will be huge and I hope to eat lots of cheeseburgers, pizza, nachos, ice cream, pie, eggs and bacon, and what ever else is available! Honestly I can't wait! I have had to restrict my food for so long it will be so amazing to eat whatever! Hopefully my body will be able to adjust to this, time will tell.
FUTURE POSTS
When I get the cozy made I will show you how I will be cooking my meals. When I get it all figured out I will also be posting all the places that I will be having my resupply boxes sent to. I will provide addresses for those who would like to send me mail or a care package :)
Looks like a great plan. You probably have all the food figured out already, but if not, have you seen this site: http://www.theyummylife.com/Backpacking_Food?
ReplyDeleteMy family lived in Burney, a PCT mail stop, when I was growing up. Every summer we posted a flyer in the post office letting PCTers know they could come stay with us and have a shower and hot meal before returning to the trail. I am sure you will encounter some amazing trail angels along the way...
I just went to www.theyummylife.com and it is an awesome site with great food recipes, tips and ideas. Loved it! Thanks for posting that site, Sometimes She Travels!! :)
