Day 11 Kickoff 4/24

Miles I hiked: 0
Camped at mile: 20
Hikers I camped with: 200+
Ending elevation:

It was so nice waking up and knowing I wasn't going to do much today. I have decided that if the opportunity arises I will go to kickoff, but if I can't get a ride I am going to zero here. There are computers and I have lots of blog work to do. Around 8 am the community center opened and the sheriff stopped by. I walked inside and put my name on the list to get a breakfast. This is a very small town and the money they make from us hikers pays for a lot of the services they provide through out the year to the community. The room was full of hungry hikers eating a home style breakfast. At 9 am a RV is leaving for kickoff and I tried to get a ride but it was full. Another hiker and I put our names on an online ride board in hopes of finding a last minute ride. I jump on the computer and start uploading pictures to my blog, the computers are old and I'm getting frustrated. A few hours later a women from San Diego contacts us and offers us a ride. I'm going to kickoff! And.... I'm not gonna finish my computer work..
Our wonderful trail angel Katie showed up and squeezed 5 stinky hikers into her car. She drove an hr to us, drove us an hour south and had an hr ride home and wanted nothing in return. People are amazing. Katie, thank you!
We dropped 2 Australian hikers off in jullian and it was at that moment that I realized that I left my hiking poles in warner springs. Damn it.
We arrive at kickoff and I'm distracted by my missing poles. I have no signal here and can't get ahold of anyone. I find my site, set up my tent and check out the place. I sit in on a couple talks. One about bears and how to stay safe and more importantly keep the bears safe from out food. A fed bear is a dead bear. Sad but true.
A highlight was getting to listen to Pepper talk about his winter hike of the PCT with Trauma. He is a bit of a celebrity in this community. Later that night we were served burritos and then I headed off to my tent for a good night's sleep.
